About

A public provident fund (PPF) is a type of investment account offered by banks that provides an interest rate premium in exchange for the customer agreeing to leave a lump-sum deposit untouched for a predetermined period of time.

The amount of money is invested in the PPF account during a year will be claimed under the section of 80C income tax deduction. PPF is a long-term investment option and investment time is a minimum of 15 years, which can be extended based on a step of 5 years.

People can withdraw the PPF account balance only when 15 years of investment is completed, PPF does not allow you to withdraw your balance from an account before the predetermined time of period.

The interest rate is set by the Finance Ministry and interest is compounded yearly. The consumer can choose desired deposit frequency (monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, yearly.) for add a deposit in a year. The consumer has to add deposits into the PPF account at least once each year for 15 years.

PPF approves a minimum investment of Rs 500 and a maximum investment of Rs 1.5 lakh for each fiscal year. If the yearly investment is above Rs 1.5 lakh, that consumer will not earn interest and not eligible for tax savings.
