What is Intelligent Message Filter?

In 2003, Microsoft introduced Intelligent Message Filter (IMF) as an add-on for Exchange Server Email system. Its purpose was to address the spam problem that was getting out of control in corporate email.

IMF used SmartScreen technology to score each email from -1 to 9 based on how spammy it looked. The higher the score, the more likely it was junk.

What happened to it?
  • 2003-2007: IMF started as an add-on, then built into Exchange 2003.
  • Exchange 2007: Microsoft improved it with the Content Filter.
  • Today: The tech evolved into Exchange Online Protection and Microsoft Defender for Office 365, which are way more sophisticated.
This version: This tool borrows the name and idea but works completely differently. It runs in your browser, cleans text on the spot, and never sends your data anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this tool work?

It parses your entered text using pattern matching right in your browser. It looks for spam keywords, bad words, email addresses, phone numbers, and other stuff you might want to remove or hide.

Is it actually "intelligent"?

Not in the AI sense. It uses smart pattern matching (JS logic) to tell the difference between a normal URL and a sketchy affiliate link, catch profanity even when people try to hide it, and fix ALLCAPS text. It works well for most cleanup jobs.

Does my data leave my computer?

Nope. Everything happens in your browser. Your text never gets sent to our servers or anywhere else.

Can I add my own words to filter?

Type your words into the Custom Blacklist box, separated by commas.

What happened to Microsoft's IMF?

Microsoft retired it in 2007 and improved it with the Content Filter Agent.
